  200. The main things that the 1.22 disks have in them that the 1.21 lack are
  201. a midi patch manager and an improved windows mixer.

  207. How the GUS works is that digital samples, snippets of sound if you like,
  208. are loaded into the GUS and then you tell the GUS to play them back.
  209. These sample snippets are usually called patches.  For instance SBOS has a set
  210. of patches that let it emulate other soundcards.
  211. There is also a set of patches to play midi files supplied with the GUS
  212.

  218. mod= amiga music module, has sequence information and samples in them
  219.      to play them you need  gusmod11.lzh 
  220. snd= there is no standard "snd" file format, but the GUS's USS8 program
  221.      saves samples with an snd extension- see the manuals
  222. wav= windows sample format.  You can record these with the windows sound
  223.      recorder into a GUS if you have a microphone, and play back with
  224.      this
  225. 669= sequence/sample file  like a mod
  226.      play them back with p669gu0.arj
  227. voc= soundblaster sample file format
  228.      I dont remember how to play back these except by using gts

  257. since I bit the _long-distance_ ($$) bullet and called the
  258. 604-431-5020 (non-800) number back in my homeland (Canada):

  261. They rattled off a few of the new GUS packages they will be selling
  262. almost all of which included one form of Gravis hand controller
  263. or other and some software (a game, etc. etc.)

  266. *SHIPPING-NOW* which *I* at least did not know until they told me.

  313. The first thing I would like to say, is that everything was working.  Then,
  314. occasionally, I'd have problems with SBOS loading.  Then, I got a HDD
  315. controller failure.  Now, I can't get SBOS to load without locking my machine.
  316.  
  317. some specifics:
  318. using 1.22.  (I tried 1.23 but it didn't work, either. Didn't try extensively)
  319. While using sbos -d it locks up while loading SBOS1.SBS, but I can CAD out of
  320. it (Note, CAD = Ctrl-Alt-Delete) IF I don't run ULTRINIT first.  But, I don't
  321. know if the problem is with sbos1, or just that sbos1 is the first patch...
  322.   If I do run ULTRINIT, I don't get anything when I run SBOS, immediate hard
  323. lockup.
  324.   Everything that runs native (windows, GUS setup, playmidi) still runs fine.
  325.   Loading SBOSDRV.SYS seems to make things worse, but by this point, I was losi
  326. ng patience.
  327.   My config.sys and autoexec.bat files change a lot.  Ive tried it with everyth
  328. ing from load everything, to bare bones configurations.

  330. My plea: Any ideas?  The HDD failure makes me think my controller might be
  331. going, but I'd much prefer to be sure before replacing it.

  344.      I'm running the 1542B as the only disk controller in my 386/40 box
  345. and the GUS seems to be working as well as I could expect.  I did have to
  346. switch it to INT 15 because the 1542B was already using INT 11.
  347.  
  348.      My only problem is that I can't use the 16bit DMA channels.  I don't
  349. get parity errors, it just locks solid the moment I access the card.  It
  350. works fine if I use the 8bit DMA channel.  I haven't opened up the box to
  351. look for the "OPTI" word yet, I'm not sure I want to :-)

  369. phenonemon.  I found that my computer system stopped while gusmod was playing.
  370. So I timed it, and I found out that for every minute the system clock
  371. only advanced one second.  Has anyone else had this anomaly?

  386. I've been using gusmod1.1 for a while now and am very impressed with the
  387. results, sounds equivalent if not better than the Amiga.. But some of mty mods
  388. don't work properly, i think because they are Protracker mods, I heard that
  389. version 1.2 was to be available in the next couple of days (over 2 weeks ago)
  390. which would include Protracker support as well as a graphical interface,
  391. background playing using interupts, and lots of other cute features.

  483. I've got an Adaptec 1540B (no floppy support, but otherwise identical to
  484. the 1542B) and have had no problems with it and the GUS. The major problems
  485. I had were with SETUP and the default GF1 IRQ (11 is taken by the Adaptec).
  486. Since SETUP wouldn't co-exist well with QEMM, I couldn't change the default
  487. and so access to the SCSI drive failed. Thankfully, my primary drive is an
  488. IDE so I could still boot and fix the problem...
  489.  
  490. Note that I haven't tried 44.1Khz sampling but I think the Adaptec is fast
  491. enough to handle it. Alot depends on what disk you're using as well...

  558. available in the "next couple of weeks". But they had not decided how
  559. they were going to distribute it (Just sending it to registered users or
  560. wait for you to call and ask for it).
